The scar ran down her leg from the knee to the ankle. She brushed her fingertips over its surface, remembering.
Jerry was only seven when he started surfing;by the age of eleven, he was positively incredible, moving over the face of big waves like there wasn’t even a slightest bit of efforts involved in.
On that day in Bah, though, the ocean had seemed strange. The waves broke like water in a washing machine, and the breaks had been heavy too. making it tough to tell whether it was better to try to catch one or to get out of its way. That was how he’d misjudged.
Ella had seen her brother lose control, his board was thrown out of the water riderless high into the air, but she hadn’t seen him surface. She’d waited for the space of a breath. Nothing. Something, clearly, was wrong.
She dashed into the water, swimming faster even than the competitions at school. Lung burning. Heart Piping-Focused.
She’d found him floating just beyond the reef (暗礁), face up but knocked out cold. Just as she was paddling the water hard, her leg was hurt by the reef, a short, sharp instant of pain.
No matter. She had kept Jerry’s head above water, swimming all the way back to shore. That day had been the worst, scariest moment in Jerry’s surfing career, which has seen him rise from a no-name kid who loved the ocean to a young star, winning competitions around the world.
For Ella, her life had changed as well. She had learned something about who she was, about what she could achieve. She ran her fingers again over the scar, the physical map of the person she had become.

B. She had not seen Jerry lose control before.

D. She noticed Jerry held his breath longer.
25. What does the underlined part “positively incredible” probably mean?

B. Jerry learned how to surf all by himself.
C. Ella was grateful for this terrible experience.
D. Jerry had his leg injured in the surfing accident.

One Japanese woman has proved that age really is just a number.
Masako Wakamiya learned how to use a computer at the age of 60 and now, at 81, she has released an app that shows people how to property display traditional dolls for Hinamatsuri.
Wakamiya spent 43 years of her life working in a bank in Japan and only started using computers at the age of 60, reports Rocket News24.
However, she is showing others that not all elderly individuals are afraid of technology.
After her retirement, Wakamiya bought her first computer and joined an online computer club to become more familiar with the technology - but this was after she set up and connected the computer to the web on her own.
After 5 years’ learning about computers, Wakamiya began designing her own apps. The app, called Hinadan, asks players to place 12 dolls in their proper positions on a standard display.
If you place the doll in the wrong spot, the app will play a ‘Boo’ sound, but if it is correct, players should hear ‘Pon’ and the sounds of a drum.
The game will then be finished once the dolls are arranged in their proper order, which is important to honor the traditional Hinamatsuri, or Girl’s Day, which takes place on March 3rd.
Although Wakamiya may break the traditional idea about most elderly individuals, a study does suggest that she is heading down the right path to avoid other health risks.
A team at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona linked many activities with preserving brain power in the elderly - but getting on line seems particularly effective.
The American study found that those who used a computer at least once a week were 42 percent less likely than those who didn’t to develop mild cognitive impairment which is often a warning sign for dementia (老年痴呆).
28. What does the author intend to tell readers through Wakamiya’s story?
A. The elderly are fond of tradition festivals.
B. The elderly are interested in technology.
C. It benefits the elderly to use computers occasionally.
D. It takes the elderly longer time to design apps.
29. At what age did Wakamiya begin to design her own apps?
A.43. B. 60. C. 65. D. 81.
30. Why did Wakamiya design the game?
A. To honor the traditional Girl’s Day.
B. To avoid cognitive impairment.
C. To enrich old people’s life.
D. To exhibit her dolls on the Internet.
31. By saying “age really is just a number”, the author means that .
A. the elderly are sensitive to numbers
B. the elderly don’t fit in with the Internet
C. the elderly can still do many things
D. the elderly find it unavoidable to get old

Selfies (自拍) are increasingly popular on social media. Selfie accessories (配件) such as selfie sticks are now as common as selfie cameras on phones, and the word “selfie” was even added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013.
While selfies are extremely common, opinions on selfies can vary significantly, with some seeing them as creative and a way to connect with other people and others seeing them as narcissistic (自恋的`), self-promotional and inauthentic.
In a recent study published in Frontiers in Psychology, Sarah Diefenbach,a professor at Ludwig-Maximilians- University Munich, conducted an online survey to assess people’s motivation and judgments when taking and viewing selfies.
A total of 238 people living in Austria, Germany and Switzerland completed the survey.
Interestingly, despite 77% of the participants taking selfies regularly, more than 60% agreed on the potential negative (消极的) consequences of selfies, such as influences on self-respect. And 82% of participants indicated that they would rather see other types of photos instead of selfies on social media. This phenomenon, where many people regularly take selfies but most people don’t appear to like them, has been termed the “selfie paradox” by Diefenbach.
The participants owed greater self-promotional motivation and less authenticity to selfies taken by others, compared with those taken by themselves. “This may explain how everybody can take selfies without feeling narcissistic. If most people think like this, then it is no wonder that the world is full of selfies,” Diefenbach explains.
32. What is the purpose of the online survey?
C. To see how many people take selfies regularly.
D. To see why people take selfies and how they see it.
33. The selfie paradox^ describes that .
A. people enjoy taking selfies but don’t seem to like them
B. people consider selfies as creative but inauthentic
C. people like selfies by others instead of by themselves
D. people regard selfies harmful though they bring self-respect
34. What can we learn from the text?
A. Most people refuse to put their selfies on social media.
B. Most people .end to show interest in others’ selfies.
C. Takin selfies is a good way to respect oneself.
D. Taking selfies is a common scene around us.
35. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Selfies or Narcissism B. No Selfies, No Popularity
C. Love Me. Love My Selfies D. Better Selfies, Better Respect
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What do you do if your child tells you that they want to choose a major where they aren’t likely to make a lot of money? Or what if you’re worried about their happiness, how they will repay their student loans and when they will get a job after graduation? 36
Talk about the economics (经济因素) of their choice. It’s important that your child chooses a field they’re excited about. 37 If your child hasn’t yet thought about the student loan payments they’ll be making after graduation, that can be a good place to start the conversation. Suggest your child research the job prospects (前景) as well as average salaries for majors they’re interested in. If they still want to major in the low-salary field, you might suggest they go to a less expensive college.
38 Your child might be passionate (激情) about majoring in a field where their job prospects are slim and you might be afraid of discouraging them by suggesting something else. In that case, ask them if they are open to minoring (辅修) in that field and majoring in a more marketable field. Sometimes the particular major/minor combination is the key to success on the job market.
Find ways to make the major marketable. If your child doesn’t want to change their major or add a minor, encourage them to get job experience while in college, 39 Many employers won’t care what students majored in if they come to a new position with relevant job experience and great references.
Make sure it’s a good fit. Before they make a decision, encourage your child to meet with an adviser who can help them have a better knowledge of the major they want to choose. Have them talk to people who are currently working in the field and to students who are currently majoring in the field. 40
A. Suggest a second major.
B. Turn to an adviser for help.
C. Here are some tips for you.
D. But it’s also necessary to consider the finance.
E. Practical work experience helps ensure a good job.
F. This will help them determine if that major is right for them.
G. You’re worried that your child won't like their chosen major.
