Do You Have a Sense of Humor?

Humor and laughter are good for us. There is increasing evidence that they can heal us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In fact, every system of the body responds to laughter in some positive, healing way. So how can we get more laughter into our lives? __________(46) Psychologist and author, Steve Wilson, has some answers.

Many people believe that we are born with a sense of humor. They think, "Either youve got it,or you dont." Dr. Wilson points out that this is false.__________ (47)

The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth. __________(48) (After all, when a baby laughs, we dont rush over and say, "That kid has a great sense of humor!") A sense of humor is something that you can develop over a lifetime.

Sometimes people think that they dont have a good sense of humor because they are not good joke tellers. Dr. Wilson reminds us that telling jokes is only one of many ways to express humor.

__________ (49) Then we will make others laugh, too.

A person who has a true sense of humor is willing and able to see the funny side of everyday life.

One of the best definitions of a sense of humor is "the ability to see the nonserious element in a situation." Consider this sign from a store window. "Any faulty merchandise will be cheerfully replaced with merchandise of equal quality." The store manager probably placed the sign in the window to impress customers with the stores excellent service. __________(50) As Dr. Wilson says,"A good sense of humor means that you dont have to be funny, you just have to see whats funny."

  A. He advises us to lose our inhibitions (抑制) and try to laugh at ourselves.

  B. Is it possible to develop a sense of humor?

  C. However, that does not mean that infants have a sense of humor.

  D. What is true, however, is that we are born with the capacity to laugh and smile.

  E. Everyone experiences this emotion.

  F. He had a serious purpose, but if you have a sense of humor, you will probably find the sign funny!

  What Is a Dream?

For centuries, people have wondered about the strange things that they dream about. Some psychologists say that this night time activity of the mind has no special meaning. Others, however, think that dreams are an important part of our lives. In fact, manye xperts believe that dreams can tell us about a person’s mind and emotions.

Before modern times, many people thought that dreams contained messages from God. __________(46)

The Austrian psychologist, Sigmund Freud, was probably the first personto study dreams scientifically. In his famous book, The interpretation of Dreams (1900), Freud wrote that dreams are an expression of a person’s wishes. He believed that dreams allow people to express the feelings, thoughts, and fears that they are afraid to express in real life.

The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung was once a student of Freud’s. Jung, however, had a different idea about dreams. Jung believed that the purpose of a dream was to communicate a message to the dreamer. ____________(47)For example, people who dream about falling may learn that they have too high an opinion of themselves. On the other hand, people who dream about being heroes may learn that they think too little of themselves.

Modern-day psychologists continue to develop theories about dreams. For example, psychologist William Domhoff from the University of California, SantaCruz, believes that dreams are tightly linked to a person’s daily life, thoughts, and behavior. ___________(48)

Domhoff believes that there is a connection between dreams and age. His research shows that children do not dream as much as adults. According to Domhoff, dreaming is a mental skill that needs time to develop.

He has also found a link between dreams and gender. His studies show thatt he dreams of men and women are different. ____________(49)This is not true of women’s dreams. Domhoff found this gender difference in the dreams of people from 11 cultures around the world, including both modern and traditional ones.

Can dreams help us understand ourselves? Psychologists continue to try to answer this question in different ways. ____________(50)The dream may have meaning, but it does not mean that some terrible event will actually take place. It’s important to remember that the world of dreams is not the real world.

A.For example, the people in mens dreams are often other men, and the dreams often involve fighting.

B.Men and women dream about different things.

C.A criminal, for example, might dream about crime.

  D. However, one thing they agree on this: If you dream that something terrible is going to occur, yous houldnt panic.

E.It was only in the twentieth century that people started to study dreams in a scientific way.

F.He thought people could learn more about themselves by thinking about their dreams.

  Researchers Discover Why

  Humans Began Walking Upright

Most of us walk and carry items in our hands every day. These are seemingly simple activities that the majority of us dont question. 46 ________.The team of researchers from the U.S, England, Japan and Portugal investigated the behavior of modern-day chimpanzees as they competed for food resources,in an effort to understand what ecological settings would lead a large ape——one that resembles the 6 million-year old ancestor we shared in common with living chimpanzees——to walk on two legs.

"These chimpanzees provide a model of the ecological conditions under which ourearliest ancestors might have begun walking on two legs," said Dr. Richmond.

The research findings suggest that chimpanzees switch to moving on two limbs instead of four in situations where they need to monopolize aresource. 47________.Over time, intense bursts of bipedal activity may have led to an atomical changes that in turn became the subject of natural selection where competition for food or other resources was strong.

Two studies were conducted by the team in Guinea. The first study was conducted by the team in Kyoto University’s "outdoor laboratory" in a natural clearing in Bossou Forest. 48 ________.The chimpanzees behavior was monitored in three situations: (a) when only oil palm nuts were available, (b) when a small number of coulanuts were available, and (c) when coula nuts were the majority available resource.

When the rare coula nuts were available only in small numbers, the chimpanzees transported more at one time. Similarly, when coula nuts were the majority resource, the chimpanzees ignored the oil palm nuts altogether. 49 ________.

In such high-competition settings, the frequency of cases in which the chimpanzeesstarted moving on two legs increased by a factor of four. Not only was it obvious that bipedal movement allowed them to carry more of this precious resource, but also that they were actively trying to move as much as they could in one go by using everything available——even their mouths.

The second study, by Kimberley Hockings of Oxford Brookes University, was a 14-month study of Bossou chimpanzees crop-raiding, asituation in which they have to compete for rare and un predictable Resources. 50________.

A.Researchers allowed the wild chimpanzees access to different combinations of two different types of nut — the oil palm nut, which is naturally widely available, and the coula nut, which is not.

B.human walking on tou shdouf hiosu.

C.But an international team of researchers, including Dr. Rich mond from GWs Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, have discovered that human walking upright, may have originated millions of years ago as an adaptation to carrying scarce, high-quality resources.

D.Standing on two legs allows them to carry much more at one time because it frees up their hands.

E.The chimpanzees regarded the coula nuts as a more highly-prized resource and competed for them more intensely.

F.Here, 35 percent of the chimpanzees activity involved some sort of bipedal movement, and once again, this behavior appeared to be linked to a clear attempt to carry as much as possible at one time.
